More about Corrimal

Corrimal is a beginner-friendly beach break extending 1.5 km between Sandspit Point and Towradgi Point, working best in small to medium swell with west or northwesterly winds. The northern end offers shelter from northerly winds and swell, while the southern section is more exposed, though large southerly swells break down somewhat against Sandon Point headland to the south. The break is suitable for developing surfers looking for consistent, forgiving conditions.

The broader Illawarra region has substantial surfing heritage, with the earliest European records of significant waves along this coast dating to 1770 when Captain Cook's expedition encountered heavy surf preventing landing. The modern era of organized surfing in the region began with the establishment of the Wollongong Surf Lifesaving Club in 1911. The area has produced notable competitive surfers, particularly in more recent decades.

Corrimal Beach sits six kilometers north of Wollongong's center and is backed by sand dunes and a tourist park. Access includes facilities such as picnic areas, playgrounds, showers, and nearby cafes. Seasonal lifeguard patrols run from October through late April. The beach faces exposure to rips, particularly travelling rips and topographic rips, and rocks are present at and near the break points. Large southerly swells create stronger currents, making these hazards more pronounced.
