More about Coronado Beach

Coronado Beach is a beach break that reforms both left and right over sand, producing waves that tend toward mushy, close-out conditions even on moderate swell days. It typically receives small to medium waves in the 3- to 6-foot range and handles distant groundswells best from the southwest, with northern offshore winds providing the cleanest water. High tide is best for surfing, though the beach becomes crowded and the actual exposed shoreline shrinks as the tide rises. Rip currents, shorebreak dumping, and cold water are persistent hazards.

Surfing at Coronado dates to at least the early 1950s, when local surfers including Tom Carlin and lifeguards Russ and John Elwell—who later attempted the North Shore of Oahu—were riding these waves. Margie Manock was among Coronado's first women surfers during this same era. The Lorton Mitchell Surf Fest, held annually on Thanksgiving weekend, has been running for roughly 35 years and honors the memory of Lorton Mitchell, a local home builder, paddle coach, and ocean advocate who died in 2015. The event now benefits the Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma Research Foundation and supports the Coronado Surfing Association's youth scholarship and environmental programs.

Access via Ocean Boulevard near the Hotel del Coronado offers free street parking, though spots are scarce without an early arrival. Avenida del Sol to the north provides more reliable free parking a short walk from the beach, while Glorietta Bay Marina and Stan's Beach have dedicated lots accessed from Orange Avenue. The beach's wide shoreline makes it spacious for practice, particularly on smaller-swell days when conditions favor beginners.
