More about Contis plage
Contis plage is a sandy beach break producing left and right-handers that can peel for extended distances when conditions align. The seabed shifts with seasonal sandbank movement, making the wave character variable; autumn swells from the north and northwest produce the most predictable conditions, though the break responds to swell across a range of directions. The wave requires intermediate to advanced technique due to sometimes mushy shapings and the complex interplay between the river mouth currents and open ocean swells. The spot works across all tidal stages but benefits from east-southeast offshore wind to hold the face. High-tide shore breaks and persistent undertow—especially localized rip currents known locally as baïnes near the river mouth—pose genuine hazards; swimmers and paddlers are advised to scout conditions before entering.
The Contis area has been surfed for decades and sits within the Landes coastal corridor that developed a sustained regional culture, though it remains less famous than nearby Hossegor or other iconic Atlantic breaks. The Contis lighthouse, erected in 1862 and standing 39 meters high inland within the maritime pine forest, serves as a landmark for identifying shifting sandbanks and optimal bank positions from shore. The river mouth and adjacent sandbars create both navigable channels and variable bottom topography that evolve seasonally.
Access is straightforward, with parking behind the dunes and easy entry to the beach. The spot lies in Saint-Julien-en-Born, sitting between the towns of Lit-et-Mixe and the river outlet, roughly 45 minutes south of Hossegor. The beach fronts a protected coastal forest and retains a wilder character compared to more developed surf towns nearby.
