More about Collignon
Collignon is a sheltered beach break on the eastern edge of Cherbourg harbour that produces small, well-shaped waves when swell arrives. The break consists of two main peaks—one near the harbour jetty and another about a hundred meters along the beach—creating fast, hollow sections that peel across the sand. Waves rarely exceed 50 centimeters and rarely last more than a meter, even on clean days. The spot responds most directly to northwest groundswells combined with south-southwest offshore winds, performing best through rising tide at mid-stage. Summer is typically flat, with February offering the most consistent window for rideable conditions. The break suits surfers of all abilities, though its scattered peaks and harbour setting mean that when it fires, the local crew paddles out.
Collignon remains primarily a regional spot with minimal documented history in terms of major competitions or notable surfers beyond its standing as a regional classic. The break's scarcity of quality days and small wave size have kept it relatively unheralded on any wider stage.
Access is straightforward from nearby Tourlaville—the beach has a tarmac pathway to the water's edge, free parking (recently reorganized with 114 spaces at the southern end), showers, lifeguards, and cafés. Cold water is standard for the Channel coast. Water quality remains a concern, as noted by local authorities, so water conditions warrant checking before sessions.
