More about Coast Guard beach

Coast Guard Beach is a sandy beach break with shifting sandbars that shape waves into smooth, sectioned sections suitable for intermediate surfers. The best conditions come with southeast groundswells and westerly offshore winds, particularly during late summer when waves are cleaner and barrels occasionally form. Most days the break is choppy, especially earlier in the season, and works best at low tide. The beach offers both left and right-hand peaks, though their locations shift constantly with the sandbars. Water temperatures remain cold enough to require wetsuits even in summer, typically around 67°F in late August.

Coast Guard Beach gained significance in early 1970s Cape Cod surfing culture as the birthplace of what became the annual Cape Cod Oldtimers Longboard Classic competition, which started as a small gathering of 20-something surfers in 1971 and drew about 30 participants in its first year. The event established this beach as a notable spot in East Coast surfing history and later relocated to nearby Wellfleet. The beach remains part of the broader Cape Cod surfing scene, where progressive short board riding developed through regional competitions and sponsored teams.

Access requires advance planning during peak summer months: from June through Labor Day, direct parking is restricted to Eastham residents and disabled permit holders, with other visitors required to park at Little Creek Shuttle Lot on Doane Road and take a shuttle to the beach. Year-round alternative access involves hiking or biking the Nauset Trail from Salt Pond Visitor Center, a 1.8-mile approach. The beach sits within Cape Cod National Seashore, and ocean conditions carry hazards including rip currents, shark presence, and powerful undertows that demand respect and attention to lifeguard warnings.
