More about Cimaja

Cimaja is a fast, punchy right-hand reef break that extends over 100 meters of cobblestone shelf, delivering hollow sections suited for turns and aerials. Waves typically run 1.5 to 2.5 meters with occasional larger sets during peak season. The break is most organized during the dry season from April through November when southwest swells pair with northeast offshore winds. Mid to high tide produces the best-formed waves; the break works consistently year-round but grows crowded, particularly on good swell days. The spot suits intermediate and advanced surfers, though it also accommodates skilled beginners.

Dede Suryana, considered one of Indonesia's top surfers, developed his skills surfing Cimaja as a younger athlete. The location has become established as a competition venue, hosting events like the Cimaja Surf Competition Pro that draw the country's serious surfers. Documentation of the spot's early surfing history remains limited, but it has solidified its reputation as an important training ground for Indonesian high-performance surfing.

Cimaja lies in Pelabuhan Ratu, Sukabumi, about six hours by road south of Jakarta. The most practical access is from Pelabuhan Ratu's central bus terminal, where shared minibuses depart regularly for Cimaja; expect to pay 5,000 to 10,000 rupiah for the 30-minute ride, or 30,000 to 50,000 rupiah for a direct motorcycle taxi. The beach access point is near Cimaja Square; parking costs approximately 10,000 rupiah per day for cars. Wearing reef booties is advisable due to the rocky bottom and sea urchin presence.
