More about Chokusen

Chokusen is an exposed reef break with a coral and rocky bottom that produces hollow, fast-breaking right-handers in a pointbreak style. The waves are unreliable and can break over an uneven reef. Best conditions occur when southeast swell meets westerly offshore winds, typically in summer with July being most consistent. The break is rarely crowded and demands experienced surfers due to the sharp reef edges and strong currents.

Miyazaki's surfing tradition began quietly in the 1960s and 1970s with a small core of early surfers. The region gained international prominence in 1990 when it hosted the World Amateur Surfing Championships, the first time this event occurred in Asia. A memorable high-performance event took place in 1991 during Typhoon Orchid, which generated waves estimated at 15 meters and produced what was described as some of the most significant waves ever ridden in Japanese surfing.

Chokusen lies in the Takazaki area of Miyazaki Prefecture, roughly 27 kilometers from Miyazaki Airport. The local surf community expects visitors to practice standard etiquette and respect local customs.
