More about China Beach (British Columbia)

China Beach is a rocky beach break with primarily left-hand waves on Vancouver Island's exposed west coast. The break produces mellow, beginner-friendly waves but is highly seasonal and unreliable, with summer typically being flat. Conditions improve substantially during winter, particularly December, when northwest swell combined with offshore east-northeast winds create the most consistent rideable conditions. Wave heights average around 2 feet. The exposed location means rogue waves occasionally sweep the beach unexpectedly, creating a notable hazard.

China Beach was among the early surf spots discovered on Vancouver Island in the late 1970s, when surfers began establishing a refuge community in the region around nearby Sombrio and Port Renfrew. Despite this early adoption, it has remained a low-profile local spot without notable competitions or widely documented sessions.

The beach sits south of Port Renfrew on the Juan de Fuca Provincial Park section of Highway 14 on Vancouver Island's wild west coast. Access is straightforward, with a short walk from the roadside parking area to the break.
