More about Chickens
Chickens is a left-hand reef break that produces long, hollow waves capable of maintaining speed and shape across multiple distinct bowl sections, often generating barrels throughout much of the ride. The wave works best in the 3- to 10-foot range; below that it lacks definition, while overhead swells make it heavy and selective. Rides regularly extend 300+ meters down the reef, with the most favorable barrels appearing during incoming mid-to-high tide when current flow is minimized. Southeast swell drives the break, while north and northwest winds maintain the critical shape; south winds degrade the wave rapidly.
Location access requires a boat transfer, typically a traditional dhoni from Thulusdhoo Island about 15-20 minutes away. The break is situated on an uninhabited reef across the channel from Thulusdhoo in the North Malé Atoll. Independent surfers commonly arrange daily transfers through guesthouses on Thulusdhoo for modest fees, or access directly from nearby surf resorts including Kuda Villingili, which sits adjacent to the break. The island itself has a shallow coral shelf with sharp reef in most areas, making reef booties essential protection.
