More about Chart House
Chart House breaks as a right-hand reef over a shallow, boulder-strewn bottom, producing fast, hollow waves that peel for 50 meters or more. It works best on low tide when waist-high to just overhead swells wrap into the break, with north wind providing the ideal offshore conditions and south to southwest swell driving it. The takeoff zone is notably tight, handling few surfers, and the reef requires precision and commitment from intermediate and advanced riders.
The break has appeared in Topanga's long surfing lineage. Notable long rides connected through the break—Paul Lovas attempted to reach Chart House on a 9'10" gun in 1975, while during the heavy El Niño winter of 1982-83, local surfer Donnie Wilson scored an exceptional ride spanning more than 300 yards past the break. In more recent decades, Chart House has remained part of the broader Topanga Point corridor where surfers have maintained the area's reputation as a testing ground for skilled riders.
Access is via Pacific Coast Highway with parking available in the Topanga State Beach lot just west of Topanga Canyon Boulevard or along the highway itself. The Chart House Restaurant serves as the visual landmark at the break's location. The area demands respect for local knowledge and established etiquette, as Topanga's lineup culture runs strong, though Chart House itself rarely draws crowds that plague the main point break nearby.
