More about Chapel Porth

Chapel Porth is an exposed beach break producing both left and right-hand waves with considerable power and hollow sections across a wide range of swell sizes. The spot works reliably from small swells but excels during winter Atlantic storms when larger, cleaner waves arrive; low tide is essential for a rideable beach, as high water submerges most of the sand. Northwest-directed swell combined with southeast winds creates the most favorable conditions, and the notorious rip currents require solid paddling skills to manage safely.

The area known locally as the Badlands carries a strong territorial reputation among its established surfers, and the lineups reflect both localism and consistent crowds. Chapel Porth's historical connection to surfing runs deeper than most modern breaks—it hosts the World Bellyboarding Championships, linking contemporary sessions to the area's pre-modern coastal board-riding tradition. Winter, especially February, delivers the most consistent clean swells.

Access is via a National Trust car park (free for members, paid via JustPark app for others), with an overflow lot opening in summer when demand fills the primary lot early. A boulder-covered path descends to the sand, and a beach cafe provides basic refreshments and accessible facilities. The beach is a genuine local destination rather than a beginner-friendly introduction to surfing.
