More about Chalupy

Chalupy is a beach break on the Hel Peninsula featuring left and right-hand waves over a sandy bottom. The beach is marked by rows of wooden erosion-control poles that create shifting sandbars where waves break. Conditions are generally mild and mushy, though the spot is best during winter when northern swells occasionally arrive; most of the year features inconsistent, small waves. North swells combined with southwest offshore winds produce the cleanest shape, while strong west or northwest winds create choppy conditions and dangerous rip currents that drain energy quickly. Water temperature hovers near freezing in winter.

Organized surfing in Poland dates only to the mid-2000s, but Chalupy became a hub for the nascent scene as one of the Hel Peninsula's two main poles (alongside Jastarnia). The Polish Surfing Challenge began on this beach and evolved into an annual national championship that now attracts competitors from across Poland and internationally, making it a historically significant venue for Baltic surfing despite the region's harsh conditions and minimal swell window.

Chalupy village sits on a train and road network from Władysławowo, with beach access a short walk from the main road. The beach can crowd on weekends but stays quiet on weekdays. Beyond the recreational draw, the wooden pole structures serve as coastal defense against the Baltic's erosive forces and present real hazards in the water; additional hazards come from strong lateral currents that develop under certain wind patterns.
