More about Chacala
Chacala is a left point break over shallow rock and volcanic reef, with a mellow initial take-off that steepens through the middle section with sustained pitches suitable for maneuvers. It holds swell well and on good days produces rides 75 to 100 meters long. Best approached on a pushing or higher tide when adequate water fills the bay; the break loses shape in thin water. Advanced surfing required.
The village of Chacala itself sits in a small cove and does not contain the main break. Access is by panga (small fishing boat) from the marina—typically a 20-minute ride around the headland to the point—or through a challenging hour-plus jungle hike with rough ground, with a four-wheel-drive route also possible. The hazards you listed are consistent with local knowledge. Sea urchins carpet much of the rocky bottom and sharp volcanic stone can cause injury on exit; foot protection is strongly recommended.
I could not find published information about surf history (who first rode it, when it was discovered), notable competitions, or specific surfers associated with Chacala despite multiple searches.
