More about Cardiff Reef
Cardiff Reef is a rocky reef break that produces peeling, well-defined waves with both left and right options. The break has a relatively slow, mushy character and performs well across different tide stages, though low to mid tide with a rising tide offers optimal conditions. Winter brings the largest and most consistent surf, particularly January, with northwest and west swells and east wind delivering the best shape. East winds keep the faces clean. Hazards include the shallow reef—a flat rock ledge extends roughly fifty yards from shore and becomes exposed at low tide—along with sharp rocks and sea urchins underfoot, plus strong currents during tidal peaks. The wave works for beginners during smaller summer swells but crowds can be heavy, especially on weekends.
The Swami's Surfing Association, established in 1964, grew out of a 1951 grassroots effort by local surfers to protect the surrounding reefs from coastal development and to serve the broader beach community. The organization has hosted the annual "Return to the Reef" invitational at Cardiff Reef for at least two decades, drawing dozens of surf clubs. Notable surfers including Mike Emerson, Joe Tudor, and Rob Machado have been involved in the club's events.
Cardiff Reef sits at Cardiff State Beach in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Encinitas. Parking is available in a large paid lot (day use typically $12–25), which fills quickly on favorable conditions; free street parking also exists along Coast Highway. The parking lot gate opens at 7 a.m., though dawn surfers can park on the highway.
