More about Carbis Bay

Carbis Bay is a beach break with both left and right handers that requires significant swell to work consistently—it's fairly sheltered and many days sees no rideable surf. When conditions align, the right end of the beach can produce hollow, wedge-like waves. The spot responds best to strong west-northwest swell combined with southwesterly winds that blow offshore. Low to mid tide provides the cleanest shape, though higher tides generate steeper, punchier waves. The beach draws crowds when it's working, particularly during winter and spring months when Atlantic swells are most reliable, and December consistently offers the most consistent conditions.

Carbis Bay serves as a secondary option for local surfers seeking shelter from Atlantic swell direction or seeking milder conditions on days when nearby breaks like Godrevy or Gwithian are blown out or packed. The broader St Ives area has deeper roots in surfing history, with figures like Tim establishing the region's influential surf school and producing notable British competitors, but Carbis Bay itself functions mainly as a practical local alternative rather than a destination break. The spot appeals to less experienced surfers when large swells arrive, offering more forgiving conditions than the more exposed nearby beaches.

Carbis Bay is located just outside St Ives and benefits from excellent transport access. A train station sits approximately 100 yards from the beach via the St Ives Bay Line, multiple bus routes serve the area within walking distance, and several parking options exist including a beachfront hotel car park and larger long-stay facilities a few minutes' walk away. The beach itself has level access and accessible facilities, making it convenient for most visitors.
