More about Capitola
Capitola's main break is a sheltered reef setup that produces hollow, fun waves for intermediate to advanced surfers, with two distinct peaks: the first jetty holds only on 4-5 foot-plus swells and throws sharp barrels, while the main peak works on smaller swell and breaks both directions over a rocky sand bottom. Summer swells from the southwest work best, particularly June, when offshore northwesterly winds keep conditions clean; mid tide produces the most consistent shape. Rip currents and submerged rocks present real hazards, though the extreme shelter and calm approach keep it crowded and manageable for beginners on small days.
Women on Waves, a longboard-focused amateur competition, has run annually since 1996 when locals Zeuf Hesson and the West Wind Surf Club founded it to raise the profile of women's surfing. The one-day event draws roughly 100 competitors ranging from young kids to masters-age surfers and has evolved into a fundraiser for organizations like Brown Girl Surf and Black Girls Surf.
Capitola sits within an active village with paid parking near the beach; the lower lot charges 50 cents per hour and runs a free summer shuttle to the village on weekends. The river mouth and jetties create a tight, protected corner that makes access straightforward—a short walk from either parking area or the downtown commercial strip.
