More about Cape Lookout
Cape Lookout is a world-class right-hand point break that runs roughly 100 meters along the shore over cobblestone and sand bottom. The wave works across all tidal stages but is most consistent in fall and winter, particularly October. West swell paired with offshore northeast wind produces the cleanest conditions. Summer swells are more intermittent, and this break rarely draws crowds despite its quality.
The area has developed a tight local community with a reputation for territorial attitudes toward outsiders. A substantial trek through the forest is required to reach the beach, which has discouraged casual visitors but also created an insular atmosphere. Beyond the hike itself, the break's remoteness—no cell service or facilities—means being genuinely committed to your session.
Access is via Cape Lookout State Park (20 minutes south of Tillamook, near Netarts). The day-use area parking lot requires an Oregon state day-use pass. The primary hazard at the break is sharp rocks and strong rip currents. Personal gear left unattended has a history of being stolen, and there have been reports of vehicle damage in the parking lot.
