More about Cantamar Settlement

Cantamar Settlement is a beach break offering both left and right-hand waves, with conditions that are generally fickle. When swell arrives, the waves can be hollow and fast, peaking during summer months. The break responds well to west to southwest swell combined with northeast wind, and interestingly, it maintains good shape across all tidal stages. It sits on an exposed beach with a relatively mellow crowd factor—unlikely to get crowded even when conditions are firing.

Access is straightforward: the spot lies about 5 miles south of K-55 in Northern Baja, roughly 26 kilometers from Rosarito and within the broader Ensenada region. The beach is accessible without major barriers, though the area remains remote and less developed than other Baja breaks.

Ensenada's broader surf culture has historical roots dating to the 1960s, when the Baja Surf Club founded Mexico's first competitive scene there and hosted international contests that attracted legendary California surfers. The region was even selected to host the 1970 World Surfing Championships, though the Mexican government declined to support the event and it moved elsewhere, limiting Ensenada's competitive surfing development.
