More about Canoe's
Canoe's is a reef break with a sandy bottom that produces wide, slow-rolling waves ideal for beginners. The break typically delivers waves between 1–3 feet, though it can occasionally reach 10 feet during larger south swells. South to southeast groundswells provide the best conditions, particularly from April through September, with offshore northeast winds that blow onshore only about 15 days per year. The shallow reef dissipates swell energy before it reaches shore, resulting in forgiving, wall-like peaks that break in both directions. Low to mid tide is generally preferred, though high tide is when coral heads are submerged and the wave is safest. The main natural hazards are shallow coral and the reef itself; at lower tides the coral can be exposed and sharp.
Surfing at Canoe's has deep roots in Hawaiian water culture, with outrigger canoe traditions on these waves extending back well over a century. The Outrigger Canoe Club, established in 1908 in Waikiki, has been central to organizing water activities here, and in 1926 hosted a six-man outrigger canoe championship that attracted crews from competing local clubs. Today, the break remains a defining location in Waikiki's tourism and recreational surf scene, where dozens or even hundreds of surfers and outrigger paddlers can share the peak in a notably social atmosphere that reflects the wave's mellow temperament. The area has hosted notable paddling competitions including the Ocean Paddler TV Castle's Cup.
The break sits directly in front of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in central Waikiki. Public beach access is straightforward, and outfitting services operate from the hotel's pool deck, eliminating the need for off-site equipment shops. Paid parking is available at the Royal Hawaiian Center garage with most Waikiki hotels and accommodations within walking distance of the beach.
