More about Cannon Beach

Cannon Beach is a sandy beach break with both left and right-hand waves depending on sandbar configuration, producing most consistently during winter when southwest swell combines with offshore east winds. Summer brings smaller, gentler conditions ideal for practicing technique in shallower water. The protected coves nearby, particularly Short Sands Beach within Oswald West State Park, offer even more forgiving conditions and shelter from westerly winds. Difficulty ranges from beginner-friendly in summer to intermediate-to-advanced in winter; the sandy bottom reduces injury risk from wipeouts. The main hazards are winter rip and longshore currents that flow with significant force, sudden sneaker waves that can sweep you offshore, and cold water temperatures in the 48–56°F range year-round.

Surfing culture developed on Oregon's north coast in the early 1960s, with some established beaches including Cannon Beach initially banning surfers. Local surfers began riding the region's waves in 1964, eventually establishing the Portland Surf Club and Tillamook Head Surfboards by the late 1960s. Cannon Beach has since become the most accessible beginner spot on the Oregon coast, supported by multiple active surf schools and a consistent local scene.

The main beach sits beneath the iconic 235-foot Haystack Rock, a basalt sea stack visible from shore. Nearby Short Sands Beach requires a 20-minute hike through old-growth forest from Oswald West State Park parking, which fills quickly on weekends and sunny days—arriving early is essential. Parking is more abundant at the main Cannon Beach access points.
