More about Campo Renes

Campo Renes functions as a right-hand point and reef break in an exposed setting, receiving reliable surf during the warmer months with a preference for southern swell and offshore winds from the north-northwest. Peak conditions typically occur around June, with waves ranging from small to intermediate sizes. The break suits intermediate-level surfers and is known for consistent performance rather than exceptional power. Rip currents and sharks are genuine hazards, and rocks require awareness when positioning in the lineup.

Punta Abreojos has developed into a recognized destination with an established local surfing community. Jaime Noia opened the Punta Abreojos Surf School in 2018, bringing decades of teaching experience from California, Mexico, and Panama. The area has produced capable local surfers, including Axel Sandoval, who was raised in the fishing village and later competed in significant big-wave events.

The break sits several miles south of the main town, at the mouth of the mangrove-lined Estero Coyote estuary within Bahía de Ballenas. Access requires driving through the Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve with paved roads for most of the route, though potholes demand caution. The road is passenger-vehicle accessible but there is no public transportation. Private aircraft can land at nearby airstrips, offering an alternative for those with aviation access. The location remains remote and relatively uncrowded even during prime swell periods.
