More about Camperduin
Camperduin is a west-facing sand beach break that holds shape across tides but rewards surfers on the lower half. Waves arrive primarily from northwesterly swells and work best under offshore winds from the east-northeast; the break produces short, punchy rides when swell wraps around the rock jetties at mid to low tide. At high tide the jetties disappear under water, currents accelerate, and the break becomes choppy and less defined. Winter, especially November, brings the most consistent conditions; summer is typically small and patchy. The spot is locally popular but rarely crowded.
Camperduin sits on the North Holland coast about 4 kilometres south of the village of Petten, part of a stretch that includes jetty breaks popular with Dutch surfers since the sport took root in the region during the 1960s. Specific historical records about notable sessions or surfers who made Camperduin their home break are not readily documented, though the spot has been part of the Dutch surfing landscape for decades and remains valued for its reliability when Atlantic groundswells arrive.
The beach is most easily reached by car via the Hondsbosscheweg, which has several parking bays with dyke access; parking is free in the off-season and paid during summer. The spot is also cyclist-friendly, with a dune-path cycle route connecting it to nearby towns like Hargen and Petten. The short, enclosed waves suit intermediate surfers, and the uncrowded character makes it a practical alternative to more famous Dutch breaks.
