More about Camaronal
Camaronal is a big-wave beach break producing both left and right-hand waves that can reach 15–20 feet during strong swells. The waves break over rock bottom for up to 200 meters and maintain their shape without closing out, creating peeling lines that hold power across all tide stages—though low to mid tide works best. South-southwest groundswell with northeast wind is required for optimal conditions, with December and winter months providing the most consistent rideable swell. The break demands serious paddling ability and respect for its power.
Strong currents, sharks, and crocodiles frequent the area, particularly near the river mouth. Access is the defining challenge: the spot lies on a remote south-facing beach about 20 minutes south of Samara, requiring a four-wheel-drive vehicle over rough dirt roads and a river crossing with no bridges. During the rainy season the approach becomes impassable. In fair conditions the beach sees very few surfers; solo sessions are normal.
Camaronal has hosted isolated sessions since at least the early 1990s. The wider area around Samara became established as a surfer's base by the mid-2000s, though Camaronal itself remains far less documented than more accessible breaks. The beach is now part of the Camaronal Wildlife Refuge, protecting nesting sites for leatherback, olive ridley, and hawksbill sea turtles.
