More about Camalu
Camalu is a right-hand point break that stretches for up to 200 meters over a rock and sand bottom, offering extended rides along the point when conditions align. Waves typically range from waist-high to double-overhead and work at all tide levels. The best swell approaches arrive from the west, southwest, and south, while northeast winds provide the cleanest surface conditions, though the region experiences persistent onshore breezes that can make conditions choppy. The break is consistent year-round and remarkably uncrowded despite its quality.
The San Quintin area, including Camalu, was part of a wave of breaks discovered by adventurous surfers in the 1970s who saw past the challenging conditions to find quality waves in a rugged, undeveloped coastal zone. The broader region had earlier connections to Mexico's competitive surf history, with the Baja Surf Club hosting international competitions in the 1960s that attracted Southern California legends.
Camalu sits roughly 175 kilometers south of Tijuana along Federal Highway 1, about 30 kilometers past the town of Colonet. Access to the break requires a rough 3-kilometer dirt road leading west from the highway to the beach. The remote location and terrain, suitable mainly for smaller vehicles like truck campers, reflects the area's undeveloped character. The spot is known for cold water and strong winds, making booties and warm suits essential.
