More about Callantsoog
Callantsoog is an A-frame beach break suitable for beginners, with waves that peel across sandbars in both directions over a sandy bottom. The spot responds strongly to tide changes, with the best conditions typically occurring on a rising tide between low and mid tide, rather than high tide. Wind from the south, southeast, or east provides the cleanest conditions, while northwesterly, westerly, or southwesterly swell directions work best. The North Spot, near De Stern, is the most consistent location, particularly since recent sand nourishment improved that section. Beyond the general hazards of rip currents and shifting sandbanks common to all Dutch beaches, Callantsoog's wave quality depends heavily on foreshore sands and the influence of nearby breakwaters, making conditions variable between sessions.
Callantsoog has become a hub for Dutch recreational surfing with an active local surf club, but I found no information about early surfing history, notable competitions, or famous surfers specifically associated with the spot.
Free parking is available near the beach entrance, making access straightforward. The town lies about 18 kilometers south of Den Helder in North Holland and is reachable by car or public transit within an hour from regional train stations.
