More about Calafia

Calafia is a right-hand point break that produces longer, quality rides compared to many nearby Ensenada spots, with waves ranging from head-high to double overhead during good swells. It's a fairly accessible break for intermediate to advanced surfers, though it's quite fickle and needs a strong south or southwest swell to work, which means it only produces rideable waves a few times a year. The rocky bottom demands booties, particularly at low tide. Peak season is summer and fall, with August being especially consistent; north to northeasterly winds provide offshore conditions that keep the waves glassy well into the afternoon.

The Ensenada region has been surfed since the early 1960s by American surfers who traveled south from California, with the area historically important to Mexican surfing's development, though specific documentation of Calafia's own history is limited in available sources.

Calafia sits just south of Rosarito, within easy reach of Hotel Calafia, making it a convenient stop for travelers crossing the border. It's one of the first notable breaks surfers encounter on this stretch of coast and has attracted a steady stream of visitors from Southern California.
