More about Cabo Pulmo
Cabo Pulmo is a protected reef break formed by eight parallel bars of igneous rock studded with coral, positioned in a shallow bay north of Cabo San Lucas. The spot works on south and southeast groundswells paired with west-northwest offshore winds, offering both left and right-hand waves. It demands intermediate to advanced skill due to sharp reef, swift year-round currents, and a tight lineup, though summer swells can present more manageable sections. Water ranges from a bracing 18°C in March to 29°C in summer; September through May offers the most comfortable conditions and clearest visibility.
The region's surfing history began in the late 1960s when Southern California nomads combed the newly accessible Baja peninsula seeking perfect waves. While the area gained prominence following the 1991 Fletcher Los Cabos Classic and now hosts larger regional competitions like the Los Cabos Open, Cabo Pulmo itself remains eclipsed by more famous nearby breaks. The spot has never attracted major contest attention or a legendary local scene; it remains relatively unknown even among Los Cabos visitors.
Access requires driving roughly 100 kilometers north of Cabo San Lucas on Highway 1, then navigating a rough six-mile washboard road that demands high-clearance four-wheel drive, especially during rainy season. The town sits within a UNESCO-designated marine preserve managed by the local community; fishing is prohibited and coral contact is strictly forbidden. Limited but functional lodging, restaurants, and dive operators exist within walking distance, though no public transportation reaches the town. The isolation keeps crowds minimal even on clean days.
