More about Cabedelo

Cabedelo is a jetty-backed point break with a primarily right-hand wave that can barrel for up to 200 meters across a sand bottom. The right offers tube sections and longer, performance-oriented walls suitable for advanced surfers, while a shorter left also forms at the jetty. It works across all tides but is best at mid to low tide, with west swells combining with east winds (the nortada) producing optimal conditions. The break can fire year-round but is most consistent during winter months, particularly December, though sand movement from winter storms is critical to maintaining quality. Rip currents at the mouth of the Lima River and rocks present real hazards, and the spot draws crowds when conditions align.

Cabedelo hosted the first World Championship Tour event ever held in Portugal in October 1996, when Matt Hoy won the Coca-Cola Figueira. The event marked a significant milestone for Portuguese surfing—João Antunes became the first Portuguese surfer to win a heat at the elite level during that competition. The venue continued hosting WCT contests through 2002, with subsequent winners including Shane Powell, Lisa Anderson, Rob Machado, and Megan Abubo, cementing its reputation as one of Europe's premier competition waves. Today the beach hosts the Gliding Barnacles' Festival each summer, combining live music, workshops, and local competitions.

Cabedelo is accessible by car with free parking at Praia do Cabedelo, a short walk of roughly 300 meters to the sand via wooden walkways. Facilities include changing rooms, showers, and toilets near the parking area. An alternative ferry service crosses the Lima River from Viana do Castelo town center every half-hour, taking five minutes and costing around €1.50 per adult. Summer months bring significant crowds at both the parking and in the water.
