More about Burnout Beach

Burnout is a sandy beach break that accommodates a range of skill levels. Waves break consistently in both directions and perform best during high and mid tides when a western swell meets offshore east winds. The beach's sandy bottom creates relatively forgiving conditions, making it accessible to beginners during smaller swells while still providing enough shape for intermediate surfers. Winter offers the most reliable waves, particularly in January. Rips and undertow pose hazards, and the area can experience water quality issues from pollution.

The name Burnout derives from the Hollywood Riviera Beach Club, a resort that caught fire and burned down on September 25, 1958, leaving only its distinctive white stucco stairs. The spot has been surfed since at least that era and remains a local beach break rather than a high-profile competition venue.

Burnout sits along the Esplanade in South Redondo Beach at the 1801 Esplanade address, with metered parking (coins required) and beach hours from 7 AM to 11 PM. It's part of the longer Strand Bike Trail and accessible via public transit, making it relatively approachable compared to more remote breaks. The location draws local crowds particularly during good winter swells.
