More about Bureh Beach

Bureh Beach features a consistent left-hander wrapping around the cove alongside a right-hand point break and beach break, all fed by south and southwesterly swells year-round. The best window runs December through March during the dry season. While the spot accommodates a range of abilities, the river mouth that creates the wave action also generates significant rip currents; the hazard is serious enough that fatalities have occurred.

Bureh is home to Sierra Leone's first surf club and holds informal status as the country's surf capital, with a surf camp providing lessons and rentals—making it the most established wave-riding infrastructure nationally. However, documented surf history beyond this local development is sparse in English-language sources.

Access via the Freetown Peninsula brings surfers to a four-kilometer crescent of sand bounded by forest. The river mouth and surrounding geography define both the wave quality and the primary access point.
