More about Bruce's Beach
Bruce's Beach is a sand-bottom beach break that responds best to south-southwest swells with northeast offshore winds, working from about two to ten feet depending on swell direction and season. Summer typically brings smaller, playful conditions around one to three feet, while winter swells can reach two to six feet or larger during strong systems. Medium tides offer the best shape, as extreme lows tend to close out while high tides cause backwash off the steep beach. It breaks over a sandy bottom with both left and right-hand peaks, holding waves cleanly when conditions align. The spot attracts beginners and intermediate surfers due to consistent, manageable waves, though rip currents form during larger swells and require awareness. The vibe here is notably more relaxed compared to nearby El Porto, which tends to draw a more competitive crowd.
The beach's surfing history is modest and undocumented in contemporary records, though its historical significance dates back to 1912 when Charles and Willa Bruce purchased the land and established an African-American beach resort. This site was culturally important as one of the few places Black families could freely access the ocean during the Jim Crow era before the city seized it through eminent domain in 1924 and demolished the resort in 1927.
Access is straightforward, with parking available in the Manhattan Beach area near 26th Street and Highland Avenue or through the nearby El Porto parking lot to the north. The beach is a public park with standard facilities, typically seeing moderate to heavy crowds during peak conditions, so arriving early and practicing good etiquette is advisable.
