More about Brooks Street

Brooks Street is a serious, advanced reef break that produces a long left-hand wave during large south and southwest swells. The break holds best in summer and autumn months when Southern Hemisphere swell and subtropical systems provide consistent energy. The wave itself has been described as a shapeless racing left that runs for roughly 200 yards when working properly, making it a technical, barreling proposition that demands timing and skill.

The spot has hosted the Brooks Street Surfing Classic since 1956, one of the oldest continuous surf contests in the country. This deep historical pedigree speaks to the wave's consistent appeal to the elite surfer community despite its demanding nature and limited swell window.

Brooks Street sits at the end of Brooks Street off South Coast Highway with pedestrian access via public stairs down to the beach. Parking is metered street parking in the residential neighborhood and fills quickly during swells. The entire bottom is rocky reef with sections exposed at low tide, making entry and exit particularly technical. Mid to high tide presents the safest paddling conditions.
