More about Bracklesham Bay
Bracklesham Bay is a fickle sand beach break on the South Coast of England that works best during winter, particularly in January, when southwest swell combines with north wind. The break runs for up to 100 meters along shifting sandbanks and is best around mid-tide when the tide is rising. Waves rarely exceed overhead height, and the spot works only when conditions align properly; summer typically sees weeks of nothing. The sandy bottom makes it relatively forgiving for beginners and intermediate surfers, though mid to high tide brings complications—shingle banks build up, and wooden groynes that are submerged become hazards. Shore break becomes heavy at high tide and can injure less experienced surfers.
The spot is known among UK surfers as a reliable longboard wave during good swells. The bay has hosted local competitions, including events where UK surfers like Mike Lay and Emily Currie have won awards. Notably, in recent years a rare swell aligned perfectly to create one of the best sessions in nearly three years, drawing crowds from Brighton and across the South Coast.
The beach sits on West Sussex near Chichester, roughly 20 minutes from town and two to two-and-a-half hours from London. Public parking is available along East Bracklesham Drive with a pay-and-display system, and a slipway provides beach access. Facilities include toilets, a changing places facility, and a cafe. The sandy beach is studded with groynes throughout its length, and large areas of exposed sand appear at low tide.
