More about Boulder Beach
Boulder Beach forms on the Iron Peg, a rocky outcrop with a steep outside section that transitions into more moderate slopes inside. The break produces hollow sections in 3-6 foot swell, with the best barrels occurring on a rising tide—high water can make it choppy and overly full. The break benefits from southeast swell and works in southerly winds when the headland provides protection. The stone bottom throughout means numerous rocks underfoot both in the water and on entry and exit points. The takeoff is notoriously shifty, adding to the technical demands already suggested by the advanced difficulty rating.
Access is via a short walk from a small car park at Iron Peg off Rocky Point Road. The break is not patrolled by lifeguards, and the rocky nature of the beach means swimming is essentially impractical outside of surfing.
