More about Boneyards

Boneyards is a powerful, technical right-hand reef break on extremely shallow water that delivers consistently barreling sections and fast, unpredictable walls. It works best in the 3–5 foot range with southeast groundswell and northwest wind, though it can produce waves on smaller days when nearby Supertubes lies flat. The challenge lies in navigating the hectically fast takeoff, particularly on backhand approaches, where a surfer must thread through multiple barrel sections to reach the main lineup. On rare occasions when swell lines up perfectly across the entire point, Boneyards connects through to Supertubes, enabling rides of over a kilometer.

Boneyards has developed a reputation as the heaviest and most unpredictable wave in the J-Bay lineup, and its gnarly character has attracted a core group of local surfers who use it as an alternative to the more crowded adjacent breaks. The spot's name derives from the shallow, skeletal reef structure it breaks across.

Boneyards sits directly up the point from Supertubes, occupying the shallow section in the broader South J-Bay wave sequence between the more-forgiving Magna Tubes and the famous main break. Access follows the same entry path as Supertubes, though paddling out at Boneyards requires navigating the shallow take-off zone.
