More about Bolsa Chica State Beach
Bolsa Chica is a beach break producing both left and right-handers over sand with a working swell range of roughly 2 to 8 feet. The wave performs best when southwest swell meets northeast wind, particularly during Santa Ana conditions, and responds well to higher tides. The break suits beginners and intermediate surfers, and crowds tend to be lighter than nearby beach breaks. Hazards include strong rip currents, stingrays during warmer months, shifting sandbars, and closeout shorebreak on larger swells. Water quality remains a concern due to runoff from drainage channels that carry indicator bacteria and trace metals into the surf zone.
Fall and winter deliver the most consistent conditions, with January historically producing the most reliable swell windows. Recent construction of jetties and a tidal outflow connection between the Bolsa Chica marshlands and the ocean has improved the wave shape at the southern end of the state beach area, creating better-defined waves than existed previously.
Bolsa Chica sits roughly four miles north of downtown Huntington Beach along Pacific Coast Highway. Multiple parking lots (numbered 14, 17, 21–23) line the access points, with a pay-as-you-go system available via QR code scanning. The beach is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily and provides a straightforward walk from parking to water.
