More about Bogliasco

Bogliasco is a sandy beach break near Genoa that works on both left and right peaks across all tide stages. Summer conditions tend toward flatness, but the rest of the year brings fairly consistent waves, typically generated by local wind swell though proper groundswells arrive periodically. Best conditions align south swell with north-to-northeast offshore winds; beginners find manageable peaks close to shore while more experienced surfers hunt better-defined sections further out.

The spot holds significance in Italian surf history as one of the earliest centers of the country's surfing movement, which crystallized in the late 1970s and early 1980s after decades of relative dormancy following Peter Troy's 1963 exploration. The Fracas brothers surfed Bogliasco during this formative period, and the break became a gathering place for the first generation of Italian surfers drawn to the coast by surf films and early trips to France.

Access is straightforward from Genoa: take the A12 motorway with exits at either Nervi (from the west) or Recco (from the east), then follow the SS1 Aurelia coastal road to the village. The beach sits directly in front of the harbor with limited paid parking at the entrance; street parking is available nearby when the main lot fills during peak season. The nearest significant town is Recco, roughly 3 kilometers east, which hosts the annual Surfestival and Italy's largest surf school.
