More about Bob Hall Pier
Bob Hall Pier is a sand-bottom beach break where waves peel both left and right around the pier structure, producing fast, playful rides. The break works best when southeast swell combines with offshore winds from the west-northwest. Low to mid tide produces the most defined conditions, and the area sustains both windswells and groundswells. Multiple peaks form around the pier—primary bowls directly north and south, plus secondary and tertiary peaks that add variety. The break accommodates surfers of varying ability, though strong longshore currents and rip patterns can be challenging. Hazards include sharks (particularly smaller species and bull reds in warmer months), seasonal jellyfish, pier pilings, and persistent currents that drift surfers away from the break.
Bob Hall Pier has been surfed since the mid-1960s, when early pioneers Cecil and Larry Laws began renting boards to others in 1962, sparking a small scene that grew to include local shops and shapers. The pier's two sets of pilings created exceptionally stable sandbars and high-quality, consistent waves that became celebrated as some of the best in Texas. The location hosted the Texas State Surfing Championships and numerous other competitions over decades. The original pier, constructed in the 1950s, faced repeated hurricane damage until Hurricane Hanna destroyed it in 2020. A complete reconstruction was completed in early 2026, with the new pier featuring enhanced durability and improved public access.
Bob Hall Pier sits on North Padre Island within Padre Balli Park, accessible via Park Road 22 at 15820 South Padre Island Drive. A paved parking lot abuts the pier with no parking fee required. The newly rebuilt facility includes restrooms, fresh water rinse showers, and full ADA accessibility. Multiple beach access points via Padre Balli Park provide flexibility for entry and exit.
