More about Blowhole

Blowhole is a beach break with left and right-hand waves that works reliably year-round in the St. Augustine area. It produces best results during winter months, particularly December, when east-southeast swells combine with southwest offshore winds and low to rising tide. As an intermediate break, it attracts consistent crowds when conditions align, and the sandy bottom has submerged stumps that pose a hazard.

Blowhole was once among Florida's premier surf destinations during the 1970s and 1980s, respected enough to host professional events like the 1990 Pro Bud Surfing Tour. However, the break has significantly deteriorated over the decades, largely due to major inlet dredging operations conducted by the Army Corps of Engineers, particularly a large-scale project in 2012 that moved over a million cubic yards of material. These coastal modifications fundamentally altered the sand dynamics that made the break special.

Access is via Anastasia State Park, located about two kilometers from St. Augustine Beach on 300 Anastasia Park Road. The park charges an $8 entrance fee per vehicle and offers multiple miles of beach access. The parking lot tends to fill on busy days and summer weekends, so arriving early is advisable. From the parking area, it requires a walk or bike ride to reach the break itself.
