More about Blacks Beach
Blacks Beach is a high-tide beach break on Santa Cruz's waterfront where a rocky outcropping called Black Point creates a consistent left-hand wedge that improves during summer south swells. The break responds well to west-northwest groundswell paired with offshore wind from the east, making winter months—particularly January—the most reliable season. The beach attracts steady crowds and requires awareness of rip currents and choppy shorebreak, especially on larger days.
Blacks Beach has a particular association with bodysurfing rather than board surfing, hosting the Santa Cruz Bodysurfing Championships annually since at least 1983. The break is not historically notable in the way iconic Santa Cruz spots like Steamer Lane are known for shaping board-surfing culture.
Access is from the end of 14th Avenue, where a gated entry provides walk-in beach access separated from vehicle parking. The point itself creates the main obstacle: during high tide, the rocky passage around Black Point becomes impassable, cutting off direct beach connection to the harbor side. Parking is by permit on weekends during peak season, though the beach entrance sits only a short walk from East Cliff Drive.
