More about Blacks

Blacks produces both left and right peeling waves across a sandy bottom that rarely closeout but hold their shape even during large winter swells. The break sits over a submarine canyon system, particularly Scripps Canyon, which funnels swell energy directly to shore and makes the waves notably faster and more powerful than neighboring breaks. Ideal conditions arrive during winter months with west-northwest groundswell, east-southeast offshore wind, and low to mid tides; the hollow, high-performance nature of the waves demands advanced surfing ability and carries significant hazards including strong rip currents (particularly around the north peak and near Scripps Canyon), shallow rocky nearshore terrain, and limited lifeguard coverage across much of the beach.

The UC San Diego surf team has made Blacks its primary training venue for over 55 years, establishing it as a key site in West Coast collegiate surfing. The team has won seven national championships and qualified for the NSSA national championship competition every year for more than three decades. The NSSA hosts regular college competitions at the break, drawing roughly 20 teams and 400 competitors per event and establishing it as one of the region's primary collegiate surfing venues.

Access from the Torrey Pines Gliderport is the most direct route: a steep descent of the 300-foot coastal bluff via a narrow trail that the city has marked with warnings due to unstable cliff conditions, making the hike physically demanding and risky. Alternative access exists through Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve with a low-tide beach walk from the south, though this route becomes impassable at high tide. The remoteness—combined with the challenging hike and hazardous water conditions—naturally limits crowds compared to more accessible San Diego breaks.
