More about Black Point Beach

Black Point breaks over sand with left and right handers across its full width, producing heavy waves capable of getting hollow—particularly when southeast winds meet westerly swell. The break demands competence: the paddle out is challenging, rip currents run strong, and rocks are scattered throughout. Waves range from waist-high pulses to well overhead during peak winter swells, especially in January, and the break works across all tidal stages. The spot remains rarely crowded and is best suited for intermediate and advanced surfers.

Black Point has seen consistent use by the local Sonoma County surf community but lacks any recorded competition history or notable associations beyond regional surfers. It remains known primarily within the local scene as a committed spot for experienced riders dealing with challenging and cold-water conditions.

Black Point is accessed via a steep wooden staircase dropping roughly a quarter-mile from the parking area. The free lot sits on Highway 1's west side just north of the Sea Ranch Lodge entrance. Operating hours are 6 a.m. to sunset in summer and 8 a.m. to sunset in winter, with restrooms provided. Dogs on leash are permitted.
