More about Beacons

Beacons is a powerful, fast-breaking right-hand reef with steep takeoffs and hollow tubes that can peel for over 200 yards when conditions align. The wave ranges from waist-high to overhead and above, with real power and a distinctly Indonesian feel. The shallow, unforgiving coral reef leaves little margin for error and demands precise positioning. While it technically works across most tide stages, the reef remains uncomfortably shallow throughout. Best in the winter months, particularly February and March, when southwest groundswells line up properly with northeast winds.

The wave has attracted attention as one of the Maldives' most challenging and rewarding breaks, though specific historical detail on notable competitions or legendary sessions at Beacons itself is limited. The broader Maldives surf story involves pioneers like Tony Hussein Hinde and Mark Scanlon, who helped unlock the nation's wave potential decades ago, but Beacons' particular place in that history remains understated in available accounts.

Beacons sits in the southern Huvadhoo Atoll, accessible only via surf charter—typically the first stop when boat trips depart from central atoll bases toward the southern regions. Getting there requires committing to a multi-day charter; there is no road or daily ferry access. The closest reference airport is Male International, nearly 450 km away. Shallow reef and shark presence remain genuine hazards; strong currents and rips are also a factor.
