More about Batts Rock

Batts Rock breaks as a left and right wedging reef over a rock ledge in about seven feet of water, producing fast-moving barrels that ride into the beach with consistent shape and opportunities for airs. The break favors north swells with easterly offshore winds and typically handles waves between three and eight feet. It ranks as the most reliable of Barbados' west coast options, often beginning to break when smaller west coast spots are still flat and continuing long after they fade. The wave suits intermediate to advanced surfers, though crowd density can build during good conditions.

Batts Rock holds historic significance in Caribbean surfing as the site of the first documented overhead wave ridden in Barbados in December 1965, less than a year after early American visitors introduced the sport to the island that February. Within ten months of those initial visits, roughly 40 surfers had built boards locally and were charging overhead swells there.

The beach sits on Barbados' west coast minutes north of Bridgetown, accessible by heading up Spring Garden Highway past the Frank Worrell roundabout, then turning left at Walmer Lodge toward the signed Batts Rock turnoff. The free parking lot fills quickly on good swell days. The spot has lifeguard coverage, showers, changing facilities, and basic amenities including a drinks machine.
