More about Bastendorff Beach
Bastendorff Beach is a long, open sandy beach break that produces both left and right hand waves. It responds well to western swells and southeastern winds, with mid-tide offering the best conditions. The break typically generates waves in the 1- to 2-foot range with occasional larger sets reaching 2-4 feet, though summer months are often flat. The beach is wide enough and the bottom forgiving enough to suit surfers across skill levels—waves can be playful and forgiving when conditions are small, but the break grows more challenging with heavier swells. Water temperature hovers around 50°F, requiring a wetsuit year-round, and winter (especially January) provides the most consistent conditions.
Bastendorff Beach is accessible via a short drive west from Charleston, Oregon, about 10 miles from Coos Bay. Three separate parking areas provide easy access to the mile-long beach with restroom facilities available at the middle and south lots. Beyond surfing, the day-use area includes fire pits, barbecue grills, and other recreational amenities, and the spot rarely gets crowded. Strong rip currents are a regular hazard here and require attention, and the area is also home to sharks, both of which are typical concerns for the Oregon coast.
