More about Bankvaults
Bankvaults is a heavy, hollow right-hand reef break that stands out for its steep take-off and thick, pitching barrels over exposed live coral. It handles swell from head-high to triple overhead and works year-round due to its exposed position on Masokut Island's southernmost tip, though the May-October dry season offers the most consistent conditions. Southwest to west swell is ideal, and east to southeast winds keep the faces cleanest. The wave performs best on mid to high tides, though incoming tide can provide excellent barrel conditions. The main challenge is the shallow, jagged reef combined with unpredictable current behavior and an abrupt ending section that closes out suddenly, creating extended hold-downs in turbulent water.
Access is by speedboat from nearby land-based surf camps, with the ride from Sabbit Mentawai Surf Camp taking approximately fifteen minutes. The break sits on a thin strip of palm-lined white sand beach that meets the reef, making it inaccessible to hikers due to the island's terrain and vegetation.
