More about Banana Beach
Banana Beach is a right-breaking point break with a sand bottom that runs off a rock outcrop, positioned on a fairly exposed stretch of the Hibiscus Coast. It produces long walls and thick barrels on quality swells, with southwest groundswells providing the most consistent energy and west winds offering the cleanest conditions. The break suits intermediate to advanced surfers, requires moderate paddle-out effort, and reaches its best form during the Southern Hemisphere winter, particularly in June when clean winter groundswells are most frequent.
Crowding is rarely an issue at Banana Beach, which has contributed to its appeal among surfers familiar with the Hibiscus Coast. The spot's rocky features require careful attention during entry and exit, especially during larger swells or lower tides when the rocks become more pronounced. Sharks have been sighted in the area, a hazard common to the South African coast that warrants awareness, as do rip currents that can form during certain tidal and swell conditions.
Access from the main road is straightforward, with paid parking available about 600 meters from the beach. The village of Umzumbe sits immediately to the north, and the spot is easily reached from the Port Shepstone area. Visitor amenities include accessible pathways and facilities supporting a range of mobility needs.
