More about Ballina North Wall
Ballina North Wall is a consistent right-hand point break formed along the Richmond River breakwall, producing waves that tend to be punchy rather than spectacular—short shifty peaks are typical, though hollow sections and brief barrel opportunities occur under suitable conditions. The break works across all tide stages and responds to east-northeast swells paired with offshore winds from the west and southwest; autumn months, particularly May, offer the most reliable conditions. The wave here suits experienced and intermediate surfers rather than beginners.
The breakwall itself was constructed in phases between 1889 and 1912 as infrastructure for river navigation, with the north wall portion built from 1900 to 1905. In 2012, North Wall hosted the Jim Beam Surftag Australian Championships, attracting 120 of Australia's top team surfers—marking the first time this national competition was held outside Sydney. Beyond this high-profile event, documented surf history for the break is limited.
Access is straightforward via Lighthouse Parade in East Ballina, with parking and facilities available near the break. The Richmond River location carries notable shark risk; the Ballina area has experienced multiple incidents over recent years. Rocks along the breakwall and the river's current structure add to the hazard profile beyond typical offshore rips.
