More about Baleal
Baleal consists of multiple breaks—a left-hand reef and sheltered beach breaks on sand with occasional reef patches—sheltered by nearby Baleal Island. Conditions work at all tides. North-northwest swells paired with south-southwest offshore wind produce the best shape. Average wave heights range from 0.6 to 2.1 meters, with larger winter swells occasionally reaching 3 meters. The spot is beginner-friendly overall, though the reef breaks offer slightly more challenge. Water temperature swings between 14°C in winter and 22°C in summer, making year-round wetsuits essential. Hazards include rips near cliff faces and scattered rocky features requiring bootie protection, plus significant summer crowding from tourists and swimmers competing for space.
Baleal entered the Portuguese surf record in 1965 when English surfers first rode it. Formal surf infrastructure developed during the 1980s. While nearby Supertubos became internationally prominent through competition hosting and heavy swell capture, Baleal remained a secondary but steadily important destination, valued primarily as a progression spot for beginners and a platform for surf schools and camps.
Located 3 kilometers north of Peniche on the west coast, Baleal is accessed via the village of Casais do Baleal with inexpensive or free parking and adequate restrooms and showers. Winter (November–April) brings the most consistent swell and power but also crowds. September offers a practical balance of decent swell, minimal crowds, and pleasant weather. Summer provides warmest water but heaviest beach congestion and smallest waves.
