More about Balangan

Balangan is a left-hand reef break known for fast, hollow waves that stand out among Bali's southern spots. The wave typically runs 1 to 3 feet on small days and can reach triple overhead in winter, with individual rides averaging 50 meters, though perfect conditions connect sections for runs of 300 meters or more. The wave breaks best at the tidal extremes—low or high tide—with a southwest swell and east-southeast wind. It performs differently depending on tide: low tide produces hollow, sometimes barreling sections in the middle of the wave, while high tide delivers a more peeling, forgiving shape. Intermediates find the best progression during medium-high tide with shoulder to head-high swell; the reef bottom is relatively flat, so true barrels occur mainly on the largest swells.

Balangan sits in Ungasan on the Bukit Peninsula, roughly midway between Dreamland and Bingin breaks. Access requires parking at the top of a cliff (IDR 5,000–10,000) and descending stairs to the beach; the area has no public transport, so visitors typically arrive by private car or rented scooter from the airport (about 55 minutes away). Multiple warungs and a hostel sit near the top parking area.
